| Water Fitting Fracture |
|
| An inexpensive bathroom faucet fitting experienced a crack and caused about $20,000 damage to a finished basement. Synergy Technologies was asked to perform the Mechanical Failure Analysis for this loss. This fracture was analyzed using stress analysis techniques and exemplars were lab tested to duplicate the failure. What was found was that a sharp corner on the inside of the fitting, shown by the blue arrows. This sharp corner allowed the finger tightened nut to fracture when torqued to a normal level. What occurred is called the stress riser affect which is that the stress level can be much higher than normal if the radius of the corner is very small. The smaller or sharper the corner, the more the stress is magnified until a crack can occur even with normal |
