Tire Shredder Fire
A tire shredding operation experienced a fire on a hot day in August when a pile of shredded tires ignited after inside the building after the last person left for the day. Synergy Technologies was hired to evaluate the electrical and mechanical aspects of this fire. The electrical circuits were ruled out. The organic materials from the shredded tires were found to be affected by self heating to the point where spontaneous combustion occurred. Spontaneous combustion is a chemical reaction where oxidation occurs and gives off heat which can increase the temperature of certain materials to the ignition temperature. Insufficient cooling of the shredder was determined to be a major factor in increasing the temperature of the shredded tires which allowed the self heating to occur faster than if the material had been cooled sufficiently.
